From SVU to the VMAs - Why Taylor Swift's Mastermind is a Masterclass
Last night Taylor Swift broke records at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most-awarded artist in VMA history. And as she dedicated one of her wins to “the ultimate showgirl" Dolly Parton, no one watching had a dry eye.
We savored the moment together, because this is where Swift excels - she connects us.
Just last week she held us captive with an out-of-the-blue red curtain countdown.
And for 24 hours before the curtains parted and four new singles were announced, the world was primed and ready for...well, an encore.
With easter eggs a plenty – think of the zeros in her Instagram bio, the letter on her website and that clever Emmy Award SVU clip - Swifties everywhere put their heads together in delight to decode.
Was it wedding pictures? Would the curtain open to reveal a marriage montage?
Was she pregnant? Three zeros could easily look like OOO – was she stepping away from the mic towards motherhood?
Is it a girl? Triplets? Was there hidden meaning in Pink Clouding and BABYlon?
Who knew. The frenzied hypothesizing was less important than the frenzy itself.
So when The Life of a Showgirl Encore dropped and the single Patient Zero premiered, we banded together to experience it as a group.
What is this music mastermind teaching us - and the next generation - when this happens? That the unexpected can connect us across all ages and area codes, and there is joy to be found.
Whether we remember her debut, grew up alongside her lyrics, screamed our lungs out at her concerts or enjoyed Secret Sessions or Swiftmas, what could otherwise be individual events overtake us as shared moments.
We like to map the clues.
We love to listen on repeat.
We dissect each drop – and, indeed, this time debate is vigorous.
Public reaction that the four Encore tracks generated in the first twelve hours proved decidedly mixed.
For some, the disappointment was palpable: The Guardian described the tracks as "sweet highs and galling lows," while The Independent deemed it "one diamond and three duds." Other headlines continued their lament and social media memes about Cleveland! swept our feeds like magic.
But for others (this fan included), the joy was real. Publications like The Globe and Mail preferred Encore to the original Life of a Showgirl, Business Insider beamed over Pink Clouding and USA Today cheered that all four songs "deserve an ovation."

Whatever you think of the songs, though, for me it was the collective anticipation surrounding the rollout that made me catch my breath. She did it again, I thought. With the slightest head tilt, a coded message uttered straight to camera, an anagram or two and a countdown clock on a continuous drip, Taylor united her audience in a joyous game of Clue.

A masterclass - and this may be what her audience loves most.
That, like friendship bracelets exchanged among strangers, fans eagerly try on every theory, pore over every lyric and obsess over every numerical pattern, happily discussing it all online. A digital music drop becomes an IRL experience shared by millions in real-time, where for 24 hours it felt like the world was holding hands.
Was it a fully-formed and satisfying album drop? Nope – it’s more of a palate cleanser. It came out of nowhere, slides down easily and whets our appetite for more.
But we know there will be more. When? With a wink and some whimsy, this music mentor will let us know.
Looking forward,
Illana
