Mentor Moments that Glowed at the Golden Globes
The night opened with a mentor moment for the ages:
“To my brown sisters and little brown girls watching tonight, our softness is not a liability. Our depth is not too much. Our light does not need permission to shine. We belong in every room we walk into. Our voices matter and our dreams deserve space.”
And with that - a clarion call that rang through the 83rd Annual Golden Globes last night - next gen viewers sat up a little straighter and listened harder to all the speeches that followed. Because they instantly felt that role models were speaking to them.
Television and movie mentors did not disappoint, and throughout the night snippets of speeches gave advice and encouragement to the younger set. What were some of Être's favorites of the night?
In the order the speeches took place...
There were so many additional moments of impact (see here, here and here for breakdowns), but to me these eight stood out. Women leading in their crafts looked straight into the camera and spoke to those with rising aspirations and dreams. The showed the next gen how to honor their peers, salute their partners, acknowledge vulnerabilities and bring audiences to their feet with joy and gratitude.
I always love an awards show, but I couldn't have loved last night more for those reasons. With thanks to the Golden Globes for taking place in January - these speeches rang just a little louder during National Mentoring Month.
Looking forward to more award-winning mentor moments,
Illana
ÊXTRAS: Three more Golden Globe moments you won't want to miss: Nikki Glazer's razor sharp opening monologue, Julia Roberts' unexpected ovation, and Nikki Glazer then closing the evening in a Spinal Tap cap - a poignant hat-tip remembering Rob Reiner.
