One Mentor Whispered…and A Crowd Roared
If you caught Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos' LIVE After the Oscars show this morning, you know how the whisper of one question can turn into the roar of an audience.
The same thing happened a week or so ago for Être...with Kelly & Mark!
Hey there..., I emailed a friend and longtime Être mentor. I have a group of high school girls fascinated by journalism, storytelling and media - they'd be over the moon to meet some of the women making it happen at ABC. Any way to pass this on?
And because she is a rockstar as well as a role model, editor, author, podcaster, speaker and powerhouse personality, Meaghan Murphy did more than just pass it on.
She whispered the request directly into the ears of producers at LIVE with Kelly and Mark and 22 girls suddenly found themselves with front row seats on-set and a first-hand view of women running the show.
Can you imagine, one girl asked another as they walked past heavy blue curtains into the blindingly bright studio, seeing your name in lights like that at work every day?
YES, came the fast response...and then they roared their thanks all morning.
In between the cheering they watched producers and PAs run down the show while lighting and stage managers prepped the set. They heard audio engineers chat with camera operators from two feet away, and then rose to their feet as Olympians and movie stars fielded questions from the desk.
What else did girls have to say about the day?
I loved watching the producers work…they were everywhere and we were SO close to them!
Seeing Madison Chock and Evan Bates was incredible since I used to be a competitive skater!
I watch 911 Nashville so hearing Kelly and Mark interview Chris O’Donnell was so cool!
Finally (and unsurprisingly) …
Kelly. Meeting Kelly was literally everything.
And it was. Because even though their interaction was brief, taking place during one a segment break, her connection was impactful. A quick conversation about mentorship – I’d love YOUR feedback too, exclaimed Ripa – turned into photo ops and a promise from a producer to bring us back after the Oscars.
For more convos with Kelly, we’ll happily take them up on that.
Because, as one of the younger attendees said as she shifted her backpack from one shoulder to the other, Kelly’s the real deal. I agreed wholeheartedly, noting that Kelly just celebrated her 25th anniversary with the show a few weeks ago.
Marking a quarter of a century on the show and interviewing thousands of guests alongside four different co-hosts, Ripa has not only made an indelible mark within the ABC franchise but has become a Guinness World Record holder for the longest career hosting a morning talk show.

"I love interviewing people and getting to talk with other people about what they are doing, and so having an entire show be about what I've done, feels itchy," Ripa noted during that celebratory show, adding "I don't think the show is really about any of the hosts as much as it's about the audience, the audience is what makes our show."
We felt that in our bones last week as girls cheered themselves hoarse in the studio and clapped until their palms hurt. Our section of the audience was practically vibrating with noise and energy…and one more thing:
It wasn’t lost on Être girls that their seats were saved because one mentor whispered to another. And they roared their thanks at a volume that raised the rafters.
When answering a question in The Epic Mentor Guide - which celebrated its 4th book birthday over the weekend - about how to find meaning at work, Meaghan Murphy said:
"Have friends on the job. Good workplace relationships are a key to helping us thrive. We’re more motivated, engaged, happier and more satisfied with our jobs. That 'work wife' or 'work husband' could even increase your employee satisfaction by 50 percent and make work more worthwhile and fun." - Meaghan B. Murphy
If watching the women at LIVE with Kelly & Mark buzz through their day with high-fives and waves to the audience are any indication, they are having fun at work with friends. And sitting shoulder to shoulder in seats saved by these women, next gen girls saw it and likely recalled Murphy's words.
When one mentor whispers...a crowd roars.
We'll be over here roaring our thanks.
Looking forward,
Illana
